Stoke Poges Memorial GardenStoke Poges Memorial Gardens

These gardens form part of the original landscape of Stoke Park, and were designed by Edward White of Milner Sons and White, being completed in 1937 with some additions in the 1950s. They were conceived as an integrated whole within which plots for the burial of ashes could be purchased, but there were to be no memorials. There is great variety within the overall design, with many water features, a rose garden, a colonnade, and formal planting along the central avenue. The gardens have recently been restored, and are a rare survival of the period.

Hall Barn

Originally laid out by the 17th-century owner, the poet Edmund Waller, the extensive garden was largely remodelled in the second and possibly third decades of the eighteenth century by Waller's grandson, aided by his step-father/father-in-law John Aislabie; Charles Bridgeman may also have worked there. There were two canals, a number of temples, many statues, an obelisk, and widespread plantations; in its day the garden was compared to Versailles. Much of this survives.
